2006, Estonian House Toronto Ont. Eating lunch with surviving passengers of the S.S. Walnut at Estonia House where I conducted many of the interviews for my PhD fieldwork. Our conversations focused on their memories, in conjunction with photographs taken throughout the voyage. In all 347 refugees, mostly Estonians, travelled from Sweden to Canada to escape Soviet repatriation. After a 32-day journey the Walnut landed in Halifax in December 1948.

December 2008, Estonia House, Toronto. Surviving Walnut passengers and family members looking at displays of photographs taken throughout their voyage from Sweden to Canada. Over 200 photographs taken by the Walnut’s Estonian passengers were collected during my fieldwork and became to focus of my PhD thesis.
