Educational Background

1968 PhD McGill

Professor Romalis carried out research on the effects of economic and technological change on the banana industry in the Caribbean island of St. Lucia, and its attendant social repercussions.

More recently, her interests have turned to the anthropological study of women and medical anthropology. This interest has led to research in the area of practices and politics of child-bearing.

She edited a book entitled: Childbirth: Alternatives to Medical Control (1982). She has been involved in applied work with clinics, hospitals, and women's groups in the Toronto area and the making of a feature film called Taking Care, dealing with hospital politics. Her present research concerns an examination of women's collective action and, more specifically, of women's use of music and songwriting in protest movements.
